What the ground does in Houston
Houston is our home base, and the clay under it is the ground we have spent twenty years learning to build in.
This part of the Gulf Coast sits on expansive clay. It takes on water and swells through a wet spring, then gives that water up and shrinks through a Texas drought, and it does that year after year. Anything built in it gets pushed on from every direction. That is exactly the case a sprayed, steel-reinforced gunite shell is built for: it is one continuous piece of structural concrete rather than a panel assembly or a shell dropped into a hole, so it moves as a single unit instead of working at its seams. Steel placement and shell thickness are what carry that load, which is why they come off the engineer's plan and not off a rule of thumb.

Will clay soil crack a gunite pool in Houston?
Expansive clay moves, and any pool built in it has to be designed for that movement. A properly engineered gunite shell handles it because it is a single monolithic piece of steel-reinforced concrete rather than an assembly with joints to work apart. The steel schedule and shell thickness on the engineer's plan are what carry the soil load, so they are not the place to economise.
Does the ground in Houston need anything special before the shell goes in?
The excavation and the steel are where the ground gets accounted for. Your builder's engineer specifies the reinforcement and the shell thickness for the soil on your lot, and the shell is shot to that spec. Drainage around the finished pool matters too, because keeping water from pooling against the structure reduces how much the surrounding clay swells and shrinks.
