A properly engineered gunite shell handles it because it is a single monolithic piece of steel-reinforced concrete rather than an assembly with joints to work apart. The steel schedule and shell thickness on the engineer's plan are what carry the soil load, so they are not the place to economise.
Does the ground in Sugar Land need anything special before the shell goes in?
